Pleated Mashru Silk Trousers

Wide-leg trousers with a slight flare, drawing from late 20th-century tailoring. Cut in handloom Mashru, the fabric is shaped over time on the loom, giving it a natural structure with a subtle surface sheen. They sit high on the waist and fall cleanly through the leg, with a gentle break towards the hem.

Finished with AṂSA’s signature metal button and concealed front zip closure. The construction is kept precise with a clean finish.

Mashru weaving traces back to medieval India, shaped by cultural and material needs. The technique was developed to allow the appearance of silk without it touching the skin, combining a silk-faced surface with a cotton backing. The name “Mashru” is derived from the Arabic word mashrū, meaning “permitted.”

The fabric is woven using a satin weave, where the warp threads float over the weft, creating a smooth, reflective face and a softer underside. Traditionally made with pure silk, most Mashru today is woven using viscose due to the rising cost of silk and declining demand for the craft.

This fabric is sourced from a Khatri family in Patan, Gujarat—one of the very few weaving communities that continue this practice. With only a handful of families still producing Mashru across India, each length is woven on handlooms, preserving both technique and continuity.

Handloom Mashru, woven with a lustrous viscose face and cotton back in the traditional satin structure characteristic of the textile. As a handwoven cloth, subtle variations in texture and sheen are inherent to the process and give each piece its individual character.
