Striped Ajrakh Maxi Skirt

The Ajrakh Skirt is cut from hand-block-printed cotton, made using the centuries-old Ajrakh tradition of Kutch, Gujarat. The textile is built through a slow, multi-stage process of resist printing, dyeing, washing, and repeated impressions, with each layer contributing to the depth and variation of the finished cloth.

The skirt brings this traditional textile into a flowy silhouette, allowing the rhythm and geometry of the print to remain central to the piece. Small shifts in color and pattern are a natural part of the process, making each piece subtly individual.

Ajrakh is a traditional hand block printing and dyeing technique practiced in Gujarat, known for its deep, layered patterns and precise symmetry. The process involves up to 8 stages of printing and dyeing, requiring careful alignment and repeated treatments to build the final design.

This fabric has been sourced from an 8th-generation Ajrakh artisan family in Gujarat, who continue to preserve and practice this craft. The dyes used are entirely natural, including indigo and iron-based pigments that create the characteristic blues and reds of Ajrakh.

Each stage of the process is done by hand—from carving and printing the wooden blocks to dyeing and washing—making it highly labour-intensive and time-consuming. Meeting the artisans and observing the process highlights the level of precision, patience, and skill involved in producing each textile.

Variations in print, color, and alignment are inherent to the handmade process and reflect the individuality of each piece.

Each length is hand block-printed and dyed in multiple stages, so slight variation in color and in the exact placement/alignment of the print is natural and part of the handmade process.
